Stack Dynamics SS7 StackSS7 OverviewSignalling System 7 (SS7) is a multi-layer communications protocol designed for use in digital telephony networks, both for call control signalling and for other types of information transfer. The lower layers provide basic communications services. Message Transfer Part Level 2 (MTP-2) is the lowest layer of an SS7 software stack. It provides reliable message transfer between two adjacent points in an SS7 network. Message Transfer Part Level 3 (MTP-3) is the next layer up. It builds upon MTP-2 to provide reliable message transfer between any two points, not necessarily adjacent, in an SS7 network.
The upper layers provide increasingly specialised
applications services.
The ISDN User Part (ISUP)
provides call control and other services for ISDN calls.
The Signalling Connection Control Part (SCCP) and
Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP)
together provide support for Intelligent Networking
services such as credit card validation services,
number portability and mobile telephony.
